November has been declared Public Awareness Month to Alzheimer’s Community Care in South Florida. This was spearheaded by Alzheimer’s Community Care, the Alzheimer’s Association Southeast Florida Chapter, and the Palm Beach County Commissioner's in 2016. Mark Shalloway, owner and operator at Shalloway & Shalloway, accepted the proclamation for Palm Beach Counter, presented by Commissioner Steven Abrams. Alzheimer Community care has been providing care to their patients and caregivers for over 20 years.

Alzheimer’s Disease is one of the many forms of dementia. It is a progressive, irreversible brain disorder that slowly destroys memory, thinking skills, and even the ability to carry out simply tasks. A pamphlet by Alzheimer’s Community Care states that the disease effects 10% of our nation’s population, and there is still no successful drugs for the treatment of the disease.

With the elderly community growing larger and larger by the year, treatment of Alzheimer’s is vastly important. Alzheimer’s Awareness Month has been slated in hopes of providing assistance to the people suffering from this terrible disease and providing accessible services and resources, all while preserving the dignity and quality of life of those affected.

This November, get involved. Reach out to families effected. Volunteer at an assisted living home. Donate to research-based organizations working to end the battle with Alzheimer’s. There are many ways you can get involved and make an actual difference in the lives of those fighting off Alzheimer’s.
