As we are fully slated in this new year, many are in the process of getting all their documents and exhibits in order.

For some, they new have expenses to deal with. Their loved one may be in the process of transitioning to a nursing home, or perhaps they recently hired an at-home aid. This leads to new paperwork, new bills, and new conversations with insurance. Some need to organize their funds in anticipation of long-term care expenses. Others find they need to update their will to better reflect their estate and beneficiaries. Some are taking on a new role of guardian.

Whatever your situation is, you should not shoulder these tasks alone. Chances are, the difficult legal and tax jargon will get muddled in the average person’s brain. Without a licensed professional, you may miss something that you needed to fill out or provide, which can cause you or your loved one to not get all the benefits they are entitled to.

This new year, make sure you work with an elder law attorney to ensure your needs are properly taken care of. Elder law encompasses about a dozen topics — from estate planning, to Medicaid planning, to special needs trusts, and so much more. An elder law attorney will work with you to ensure you and/or your loved one live out 2022 as comfortably and happy as possible.
